Silver Efex is one of the top B&W conversions, plus Nik is dang cheap now that Google bought it.

Thanks for the help. Yes, Donna, I thought I had exposed it properly which is why I couldn't figure out why the conversion wasn't correct. But it must be my "freeware." I'm hoping to get something better soon! Is the Nik a software package in itself or part of another program? Would it still work with Capture NX (Nikon's dedicated program) if that is the route I go? BW photography is my favorite, so I want to get something worthwhile.

As far as I know Nik is a plugin. I use it with cs5 photoshop and it has a plug in for Lightroom as well. When I google Capture NX I see they are saying that Google may not support it. Sounds like Capture may be on its way out? I can't answer if the Nik filters will work with it in the future. I guess that will be up to google.

From what I've seen on the Internet, it may be time to upgrade Capture, looks like google is going to drop it, also it seems there are compatibility issues with the Nik software. This link may be of use to you.

Thanks for the software info. I will look into these and see. I am going to try free trials of all of them, Capture and Lightroom, and maybe PSE if there is one.

Thanks!

I would start with lightroom and NIK plugins and see if you need anything beyond these. I find I do more in lightroom and less in PSE or PS. I love the NIK plugins as well.

FUll lightroom and NIK costs less than a seat of CS6.
