May be a bit silly to post here but I am a bit undecided on my next purchase.
I do a lot of portrait/people shots and want to up my game a bit.

Items on my wishlist are as follows,
-Westcott Rapid box Octo 26" with beauty dish. (Meaning I have to get a stand and some off camera flash system too)
-RoundFlash Magnetic Ringflash Adapter (Roundflash.com check media for photos.) Would be very convenient.
-Canon 50 1.4 lens.
-Lensbaby Composer pro with Edge 80 and Sweet 35. (a bit pricy)

As of now I just have minimal equipment. Camera, 1 lens, flash and gary fong diffuser.

Any thoughts?

Miriam, rent these things one at a time and see which one makes the biggest impact. I am personally skeptical about the list because you should know the weak link in your workflow and know exactly what you need.

I think it depends on what you do the most with your portrait shoots...if you are doing a lot of indoor stuff where you can setup, the Westcott would be great. Do you have backgrounds, other things like that might be good to consider too. Unless you are going for a full time pro studio, you can start with a lot of home made and DYI stuff for the backgrounds, stands, etc.

What lens do you currently have? Since you just have the one, I would highly recommend a 50mm 1.4 (or at least a 1.8, if that's what your budget allows) before investing in more lighting. I use my 50mm more than any other lens. They're great in low light conditions! You can get far with just natural light, reflected light, etc.

My wish list changes but at present it is as follows:

Sony 135mm F1.8 ZA
Sony A850 (I miss mine so much)
Sony 70-400mm G Series II

And to dream of would be a:

Mirrorless A mount camera
36 megapixel sensor
ISO range 50 - 16,000
Outstanding ISO performance up to 6400
10 frames per second burst mode
2 GB buffer
AWB EV scope of 12 -+
On sensor AF +100 points
Inbuilt IS with 4 stops grace
Same vertical grip as the A99
Same size as the A99
Dual SDHC memory card slots with the ability to automatically switch to second card when first becomes full.

Not much to ask lol

Thread (Semi-)Hijack!!! :D :D :D

This list will always change but these are the items I am currently hoping my photography pays for someday.

Next Items I'm looking At:
Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM - I know I will never afford the 400mm Prime so this would be great for Kids sports and Zoo pics.
Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM - Great Single Lens to have on my camera if I want to pack a single lens for some walk around shooting.
Canon Speedlite 580EX II

The Bigger Upgrades:
Canon 5D Mk III or 6D
Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM - My current 17-55mm F/2.8 is for Crop sensor bodies only so this would be needed for FF upgrade.
Tamron AFF004C700 SP 90MM F/2.8 DI MACRO - My current Canon 60mm f/2.8 Macro is for Crop sensor bodies only so this would be needed for FF upgrade.

If I need a faster lens than f/4 I'd rather go with Tamron due to price to quality for these next two lenses:
Tamron SP 70-200MM F/2.8 DI VC USD
Tamron SP 24-70mm Di VC USD Canon Mount

Primes:
For Street/General Shooting
Canon EF 40mm f/2.8
Canon EF 28mm f/1.8 USM
Canon EF 35mm f/1.4 L USM
Canon EF 50mm f/1.2 L USM

For Portraits
Canon EF 85mm f/1.2 L II USM
Canon EF 135mm f/2 L USM

Other Items:
Mefoto A2350Q2K GlobeTrotter Travel Tripod
Canon Speedlite 600EX-RT
Canon ST-E3-RT Speedlite Transmitter
