On the first image, the contrast seems maybe a little low, and maybe a little overexposed, but I like the symmetry. Are you shooting in RAW?

I agree with you about the contrast and the over-exposure of the first picture, Kitten35. The second picture looks a bit under-exposed, I think. Yes, I am shooting in RAW.

On the first photo, try using the highlight protection slider, you may be able to bring back some of those very bright sections.

I am not sure what you mean by the "highlight protection slider", Kitten35. Is this something related to PS or Lr?
